Our commitment to sustainable building
At Joseph Bricks we believe in a sustainable future. As a Belgian brickmaker, we play an important role in sustainable building. Every day we work to have a positive impact on the environment and to reduce our ecological footprint. This is an ongoing process, and we are happy to share some of the steps we have already taken.
One of the key characteristics of our facing bricks is their durability. Thanks to our clay, our bricks last more than 100 years. This contributes to the long life of the buildings made with our bricks and supports a circular economy. It reduces the need for frequent replacement and the use of valuable raw materials.
Another area we focus on is our eco-smoking process. Unlike the usual practice of firing and smoking at different sites, Joseph Bricks has developed its own approach. We cool our bricks to 800 degrees and smoke them straight away, without reheating them. This leads to significantly lower gas consumption and lower CO2 emissions. Less transport between firing and smoking sites also means less packaging and a further reduction of our environmental impact.
Recycling also plays an important role in our sustainability efforts. We recycle old building material by adding finely ground bricks to our clay. In this way we give used materials a new life and reduce the need for new raw materials. This helps to cut waste and supports the development of a circular economy.
We also take other measures to promote sustainability. For example, we use electric forklifts throughout, which reduces emissions of harmful gases and improves air quality. We are also proud of our zero-discharge status: our wastewater does not end up in the sewer. We recycle all water or let it evaporate. These efforts to preserve valuable resources and protect the environment are essential for a sustainable future.
At Joseph Bricks we are determined to keep learning and improving. Every day we take steps to make our production process more sustainable. We research and introduce new technologies and methods to further reduce our ecological footprint. Our goal is a world in which sustainability is the norm, and in which we can pass on a liveable planet to future generations.
