Waterstruck or handform: the differences

Waterstruck or handform: the differences

Facing bricks come in different textures, but what exactly is the difference between a waterstruck and a handform brick? It all comes down to how they are made. Each process leaves its own mark on the brick, or none at all.

Handform

A handform brick is marked by many characteristic creases. This gives it a weathered look with a robust character, which makes it well suited to a timeless, rugged façade or to renovating a house. It comes into its own in a traditional landscape.

To make a handform brick, lumps of clay are rolled through sand so the brick releases easily from the mould. When the mould is removed, the sand falls away and leaves the distinctive creases behind. The wet brick is dried and then fired.

Waterstruck

Just like a handform brick, every waterstruck facing brick tells its own story, this time of water and pure clay. A waterstruck brick has a fairly smooth texture and a distinctive, natural mix of colours.

Waterstruck bricks suit a wide range of designs, from robust to clean-lined.

For handform and moulded bricks, the clay is sanded before firing so it does not stick to the mould. Waterstruck uses water instead of sand. The water softens the clay, which gives the brick its own pattern when it is pressed in the table press. The result is a robust, natural appearance.

Moulded

Besides waterstruck and handform, there is the moulded brick. With this facing brick you can create a very clean-lined façade. The brick is smoother and the overall look more defined. Its surface is more regular than that of a waterstruck or handform brick.

As with handform bricks, the clay is sanded before firing. It is then pressed into the mould and struck off at the top. A moulded brick therefore always has five sanded sides and one smooth, unsanded side.

Besides texture, several factors shape the look of a façade: the pointing, the format and the colour combinations. In our configurator we invite you to explore and create. Try out combinations and design a façade that is entirely your own.
